AI and Privacy Concerns


In recent years, AI has seen significant advancements and has grown in  prominence partially due to intense marketing and awareness via social media applications such as TikTok.


Artificial Intelligence(AI) is the theory and development of machine systems, typically computers, that are capable of simulating  human intelligence processes, such as problem solving and logical analysis. Generally, AI is an umbrella term for a range of different technologies such as deep learning and machine learning and natural language processing. However, the scope of this article will concentrate on machine learning capabilities, such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini, since they’re currently the most popular across the globe.

At the simplest level, machine learning involves teaching computers to learn from data so they can make decisions or predictions without being explicitly programmed for each task. Here’s how it works:


The process of machine learning involves several key steps.

  1. First, large amounts of data are gathered, which can be anything from songs people like to the fastest routes taken to different destinations or translations between languages.
  2. Next, algorithms are fed this data, which analyze the data to find patterns and relationships. For example, they might notice that people who like a certain song also tend to like another specific song. Using the patterns found, the algorithms create models, which are essentially the algorithm’s “understanding” of the data. For instance, a model might learn that if you like a certain genre of music, you’ll likely enjoy songs in a similar style.
  3. Finally, these models are used by computer systems to perform specific tasks. For example, a music streaming service can suggest new songs you might like based on your listening history.


  • ChatGPT: Uses large language models (LLMs) trained on vast amounts of text data to understand context and produce human-like text.
  • Google Translate: Uses deep learning algorithms to understand and translate text by recognizing language patterns and context.
  • Netflix: Uses machine learning algorithms to analyze users’ viewing history and suggest content that aligns with their interests.


  1. Efficiency and Automation: AI automates routine tasks, boosting productivity by reducing the need for human intervention which leads to improved product quality, shortened lead times and cost savings. Examples include chatbots for customer service and robotic process automation in manufacturing.
  2. Enhanced Decision Making: AI analyzes vast amounts of data to provide insights and support decision-making in fields like finance, healthcare, and logistics.
  3. Improved Customer Experiences: AI tailors experiences and recommendations to individual users in e-commerce and entertainment, such as Netflix. It also provides 24/7 customer service through chatbots and virtual assistants.
  4. Innovation and Problem Solving: AI is key in scientific research, drug discovery, climate modeling, and solving complex problems beyond human capabilities.
  5. Improved Healthcare: AI aids in diagnostics, personalized treatment plans, patient data analysis, medical image interpretation, and predictive analytics to enhance patient outcomes.
  6. Hazardous Environment Tasks: AI performs tasks in dangerous environments, reducing risks to human safety.


AI Systems often require large datasets, which can include sensitive personal information. The sheer volume of data collected can raise concerns about how it is stored, used, and shared.  Users are frequently unaware of the extent of data collection and the purposes for which their data is used. This lack of transparency can lead to mistrust. Individuals often have limited control over their data once it is collected, and obtaining meaningful consent is challenging when data practices are complex and not easily understood.

Additionally,AI enhances the capability of mass surveillance programs. For instance, governments can monitor and analyze the activities of individuals in real-time with the assistance of systems using facial recognition and other biometric data. Corporate companies as well, can use AI to monitor employee productivity, customer behavior, and online activities. This surveillance can be intrusive and may lead to a loss of privacy and autonomy.

The use of AI especially when consideration is given to current surveillance capabilities and personal data collection raises significant ethical and legal questions related to the potential for abuse, discrimination, and the undermining of human rights such as privacy and freedom of expression.


The following are some tips which can be used to preserve one’s privacy when using AI technology;

  1. Understand Data Collection: Be aware of what data is being collected by the AI systems you use. Review privacy policies and settings to limit unnecessary data collection.
  2. Limit Personal Information Sharing: Only share essential personal information with AI services. Avoid providing sensitive data unless absolutely necessary.
  3. Regularly Review Permissions: Regularly check and update the permissions you have granted to AI applications and revoke any that are unnecessary.
  4. Opt Out of Data Sharing: Whenever possible, opt out of data sharing options offered by AI services and applications.
  5. Consult Privacy Tools: Use privacy-enhancing tools and browser extensions to protect your online activity from being tracked by AI-driven advertising networks and services.
  6. Beware of Phishing and Scams: Be cautious of phishing attempts and scams that seek to exploit AI technologies to gather personal information.

In conclusion, the advancement of AI has aided humanity in significant ways that have uplifted our way of life, however there are many considerations on the other side of the matter. While using AI can improve the convenience and efficiency of many mundane tasks, it is important to use such applications with caution and care for one’s privacy needs.
